Bonen Norby grew up in Watertown, South Dakota, where the Watertown Arrows were the pride of the town and storytelling was part of everyday life. A graduate of Watertown High School, Lisa remembers the energy of game nights, the warmth of family card tables, and the stories that were shared.

She started writing at age eight, inspired by a diary her dad gave her and the books her fourth-grade teacher read aloud. That early spark led to two published novels. Her first, “Without Words” (2019), is a fictional story set in South Dakota, based on real events from her family history. It follows an immigrant woman who doesn’t talk but speaks volumes in other ways —a story that resonated deeply with Lisa’s father, who inspired much of the content.

Her second book, “The Boy from In Between” (2018), is a whimsical tale about a Brazilian exchange student who talks with a monkey.
Bonen Norby now lives in Minnesota and works full-time as an executive assistant at North Memorial Hospital in Maple Grove. She writes whenever she can—mostly on nights and weekends, especially when the weather keeps her indoors.

Her current novel, “Miles to Manhood,” is a coming-of-age story inspired by the year she and her husband traveled across Europe, dog-sitting and exploring cultures. It’s a story about growth, independence, and unexpected lessons found in unfamiliar places.

Lisa is a longtime member of Nightwriters in Maple Grove, where she finds critique, encouragement, and community. Whether she’s documenting family stories for her nieces and nephews or dreaming up new fiction, Lisa’s writing is always rooted in the values she learned growing up in Watertown—where stories mattered and everyone had one to tell.

Lisa’s first book, “Without Words,” remains the work she’s most proud of. In the unforgiving winter of 1890, a young girl arrives in America carrying nothing but grief and silence. After a tragedy at sea robs her of her parents—and her voice—she is taken in by a kind-hearted couple settling in the harsh prairies of South Dakota. As she grows, she bears witness to the raw realities of frontier life: blizzards that bury homes, plagues that steal loved ones, and heartbreaks that linger like frost.

Now an elderly woman, she begins to write the story she could never speak. Her journals, tucked away in a quiet farmhouse, remain unread—until a blizzard strands her friends in her home. What they discover in her pages is a life of resilience, sorrow, and quiet strength. And what she discovers, through their eyes, is that her silence has always spoken volumes.

Inspired by true events and family lore, “Without Words” is a poignant, atmospheric tale of survival, memory, and the unspoken bonds that shape us.
