Author Bio:
After three months documenting the whaling life in the Arctic cold of Point Hope for Uiñiq, Bill Hess returned to Wasilla, sat on his back porch with a ham sandwich, eager to feel the warm sun. A stray adolescent kitten stepped out of the woods, climbed onto his lap, kneaded his beard, and asked for a bite of ham as if it had been invited.
Hess had long insisted he disliked cats. The kitten exposed that myth in moments. With firm encouragement from his children, he opened his door, then his heart. The kitten stayed. It was July 5, 1991. From that day on, there has always been a cat in the Hess household.
Carrizo follows the story of another stray—Kitty Buddy—whom Hess met in his wife’s Apache village. When “Cat Killer Dog” killed Kitty Buddy’s orange companion and then set its sights on Kitty Buddy, the quiet Christmas visit became a rescue mission. What choice did the author have?
