Fifty years later, Senate Square Society, in collaboration with The Remembrance Society, revisits the defection and what it revealed about Soviet military power and Western intelligence. The panel will feature defense and military affairs writer Christian D. Orr, who will examine Belenko’s escape and the MiG-25 itself; Defense Intelligence Agency historian Orlando Pacheco, who will place the episode in the broader history of Cold War intelligence and intelligence failures; and China military analyst Rick Fisher, who will explore what the Belenko case can teach us about evaluating the military capabilities of Russia, China, and other secretive adversaries today.The discussion will ask not only what the West learned when it finally gained access to the MiG-25, but also a question that remains highly relevant fifty years later: How accurately can we judge the true strengths, weaknesses, and technological capabilities of an adversary we cannot easily see inside?Moderated by Hon.
