- **Event Description**: Please join us for an artist lecture and conversation with Ilona Gaynor on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 6:30pm at the Flagg Building!About this EventBiography •  Ilona Gaynor is an artist and educator. Her research practice employs the language and methods from non-visual fields and enterprises such as law, finance and administration. She uses both narrative and actuary functions as a tool for excavation. Her approach to research is presented through imagined propositions, models, maps, diagrammatics, archives, narrative structures, texts and film concepts that seek to expand definitions; asking questions by inhabiting, destabilizing and subverting form, context, reading and strategy.Her work has been exhibited, published and disseminated internationally; notably at the Design Museum (UK), Palais de Tokyo(FR), The Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), Venice Architecture Biennale (IT), Lisbon Architecture Triennale (LX), STUK (BE), Black Cinema House (US), the HMKV (DE), Asia Cultural Center: ACC (KR), V2 (NL), The Aram Gallery (UK) and FACT Liverpool (UK). Her work has been funded through multiple awards including the Wellcome Trust. She was one of the curators of the 2017 Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne and has been Artist in Residence in several prominent institutions including the Design Museum, V2 Institute for the Unstable Media, Headlands Center for the Arts and to Director Ridley Scott. She was also awarded a fellowship at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Spatial Practice for 2026–2028.She has taught extensively across design, architecture and fine art; in institutions such as the Architectural Association, KABK, Princeton University, The Bartlett School of Architecture and the Royal College of Art. She was Professor of Designed Objects at SAIC, 2016–2021 and Professor-in-Residence in Industrial Design at RISD, 2024–2026. She is currently the GW Corcoran Wernick Richman Visiting Professor in Design. She received her MA(RCA) in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art, and was awarded the Sir Ridley Scott prize for experimental narrative practice.This talk is a part of the Studio Arts and Design Research + Practice lecture and conversation series, occurring on Wednesday nights. The Research + Practice series invites acclaimed artists, writers, critics and scholars to the Corcoran School throughout the year. The talks are free to the public, providing both the community and our students access to thought-provoking examples of contemporary research and practice and a chance to engage with leading cultural figures. Speakers are nominated and selected by the Studio Arts and Design programs, hosted by students and faculty at the historic Beaux Arts Flagg Building in Washington, D.C.
