Lubuto Library Partners board member Anne Caputo and Jane Kinney Meyers are requesting support from DC SLA volunteers for about a half-day of packing up a Lubuto Library collection for shipment to our newest library in Zambia. The pack-up will take place on March 9th at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Northwest DC (across Connecticut Ave. from Politics & Prose Bookstore), from 9am to (est.) noon or 1pm.
DC SLA members have joined with them in the past, not only for packing up collections to send to Zambia: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lubutolibraryproject/3557896838/in/album-72157640636880773/
but also assisting with a computer-based literacy project, enjoying an appreciation event for their efforts hosted by the Ambassador at the Zambian Embassy, and many other activities over the years.
This is the last collection they will have purchased and built here in the U.S. because, in the intervening time since their founding in 2005, they have built the capacity for collection building and cataloging to be carried out in Zambia (and, in the process, imparting valuable skills to LIS students at the University of Zambia). They hope that colleagues who have followed them over the years might really enjoy learning about that, and gathering for a few hours to help this last time. And they would love to introduce new colleagues to their work, which is still blazing trails in southern Africa, and to the young people whose varied needs are met by Lubuto libraries.
If you can commit to helping on March 9th, please email Jane at bWF5YXppIHwgdmVyaXpvbiAhIG5ldA==
as soon as possible – they may have to limit the number of participants – but no later, please, than Feb. 28th.
