Born in the Bronx and now based in Washington, D.C., Velez uses baking to explore family, diaspora, community, love, sacrifice, and change—all guided by her motto to “bake the world a better place.”In this live cooking demonstration, her Afro-Latina identity is both ingredient and inspiration as she blends Dominican traditions, Bronx influences, and global imagination in recipes that honor roots and history while creating new, unexpected, and personal flavors.Velez is the author of Bodega Bakes, the founder of global baking movement Bakers Against Racism, and the chef-owner of the celebrated Washington, D.C., bar Providencia, named among the best bars in America in Bon Appétit and in the Michelin guide. She is also the creator of the playful pop-up concept Dōekï Dōekï.Copies of Bodega Bakes will be available for purchase, and Velez will sign copies following the demonstration.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\The National Museum of American History welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities.
