- **Event Description**: Learn to see birds like a birder and draw them like an artist in this fun, beginner-friendly workshop with DC artist Summer Delehanty.About this EventWhat makes a Great Blue Heron look like a Great Blue Heron? Or a Northern Cardinal like a Northern Cardinal? You don't have to draw every feather to capture a bird.Join DC Bird Alliance and artist Summer Delehanty for Drawing Like a Naturalist, a hands-on bird sketching workshop exploring the connection between observation, bird identification, and art.Participants will learn how to look closely at a bird and identify the features that make a species recognizable, from its shape and posture to its bill, markings, colors, and other field marks. Then we'll use those observations to create our own stylized bird drawings.Summer's approach isn't about creating a perfect representation. Instead, she'll teach participants how to recognize and represent the characteristics that make a bird that bird. You do not need to consider yourself an artist. Some drawing experience can be helpful, but it isn't necessary. This workshop is designed to be welcoming to beginners, including young artists who are curious about birds, nature, or drawing.Who Should Come?Kids and teens are especially encouraged to join us!This is a wonderful opportunity for young people who love to draw but haven't explored birding, young birders who haven't explored art, or anyone curious about the place where the two meet.Adults are welcome, too. No birding experience is required, and you don't have to know how to draw.Space is intentionally limited so participants can receive hands-on guidance from Summer. What to BringDC Bird Alliance will provide the basic materials needed for the workshop. If you have favorite drawing materials or a sketchbook you'd like to use, feel free to bring them.AccessibilityThis program will take place indoors in the classroom at Langston Golf Course.
