Zipa is a three-piece rock band that emerged from Washington, DC’s vibrant Latin music scene in the summer of 2023. The group was founded by Moses Chávez (drums, backing vocals), Patrick Gorton (bass, backing vocals), and Hector Catano (vocals, lead guitar).
Zipa creates a unique musical fusion that defies conventional genres, drawing heavily from the raw energy of ’70s post-avant-garde, punk, and garage rock, while seamlessly incorporating Latin rhythms such as montuno, son, and psychedelic cumbia.
The band’s multicultural essence shines through their lyrics, which are sung predominantly in Spanglish, a reflection of the members’ diverse backgrounds. Héctor, born in Colombia, Patrick USA, and Moses, from Nicaragua, bringing their cultural and musical influences into the music, adding depth and authenticity to their sound. With electrifying performances that blend these dynamic influences, Zipa has quickly earned a reputation as one of DC’s must-see indie acts.
