She holds a master's degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Maryland, College Park. She focuses her work on the importance of documentation and preservation of African American historic sites in and around Washington, DC. From Northeast DC, her work explores the intimacy of sisterhood, the anchor of intergenerational coexistence, and grief. Awarded the Norma Elia Cantú Award in Creative Writing, the Andrea Klein Willison Poetry Prize, and a Hurston/Wright Amistad Award Finalist, she has presented her poetry to audiences in Nikiti, Moscow, and Hamburg. She has appeared across the United States, such as at The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The National Gallery of Art and elsewhere. María Fernanda is the creator of seven serial programs, all of which are primarily in-person and focused on poetry.
