The Matthew H. Ornstein Washington Summer Debate Institute is hosted each year by the Washington Urban Debate League in partnership with the Matthew Harris Ornstein Memorial Foundation. The Institute provides an intense but fun debate experience that will prepare debaters for the coming competitive season and beyond.
Parents: Be sure to register on our website
Volunteers: Please put us on your calendars! We'll be reaching out about folks able to judge practice rounds and the camp tournament closer to the event.
This coming summer, we offer at least 11 different labs and several different levels of instruction so that every student is appropriately challenged:
The Institute has a proven track record of improving a debater’s skills. Many of the most competitively successful students in the WUDL attended the summer institute. Participation makes the jump from Novice to JV, or from JV to Varsity easy, and can help students prepare for regional travel.
The summer institute is named in honor of Matthew H. Ornstein, a former debater who found his voice, his confidence, and a home in the debate community. The Matthew H. Ornstein Outstanding Debater award is given in his honor to the student who best reflects Matthew’s values.
Why Should You Attend?
We conduct a national talent search, and hire not only highly successful debaters, but people with instructional experience that can pass along their wisdom effectively
--Low Faculty-Student Ratio
No large lectures, everyone gets to engage with faculty and work hands on, ask questions of guest speakers, etc.
--Hands On Approach
We focus on practice and skill-building, with daily activities, practice rounds, and drills.
We take advantage of being in D.C. to bring in world class guest speakers to help students understand the ins and outs of this year's topic.
--Fun and Community
Debate camp is a unique space where it is cool to be smart. Students come back year after year to keep up with friends they've made.
Students who attend camp do better during the school year, and start with a distinct advantage. 2/3 of our national qualifiers over the last 5 years attended the summer institute.
