Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. Adult MHFA courses are for everyone aged 16 upwards.
Sessions will be a mix of presentations, discussions and group work activities. Everyone who completes the course receives an MHFA manual to take away which is an excellent support resource. They also receive an attendance certificate from MHFA England to say that they are now a Mental Health First Aider.
Each of the four manageable chunks focus on how to apply Mental Health First Aid skills.
Session 1: Mental Health First Aid, mental health & stigma, and depression
Session 2: Depression (cont.) and suicidal crisis
Session 3: Anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm
Session 4: Psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and recovery
• A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing, including your own
• Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
• Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
• Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
• Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support
The 2-day course will be delivered across 4 x 2 hour sessions and approximately 1 hour of pre-reading for each session. In total delegates would need to be able to dedicate at least 12 hours for the course.
Each delegate would receive access to a secure MHFA England learning hub where they do the pre-reading.
