Ściana nie jest w nich przeszkodą, lecz granicą, przy której malarstwo może zacząć przekraczać dosłowność widzenia, pobudzając wyobraźnię ku temu co znajduje się po jej drugiej stronie. Dlatego u Popik przywołane granice nigdy nie są całkowicie szczelne. (Bolesław Leśmian, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭) A quiet metro tunnel, endless arcades, a moment of a bird’s flight suspended in time, a butterfly caught in stillness, autumn leaves — these are just some of the motifs that Agata Popik presses into the structures of photographic film, shooting-range targets, and various grids, screens, and fences. The artist’s newest paintings bring to mind multilayered still frames composed of impressions, emotions, remembered moments, and views. (…) It is no coincidence that various forms of boundaries so often return in Agata Popik’s paintings: grids, low walls, screens, blinds, fences. They function simultaneously as surfaces and obstacles. As motifs, they organize the rhythms and frames of the compositions, structure the act of looking, while at the same time suggesting the existence of something beyond them. In this context, an important point of reference for the artist is the painter Piotr Potworowski’s notes on “reaching the wall.” The wall is not understood there as an obstacle, but as a boundary at which painting can begin to move beyond the literalness of seeing, stimulating the imagination toward what lies on the other side. This is why, in Popik’s work, the boundaries she evokes are never completely sealed. On the contrary, they become surfaces around which the world begins to shift into imagination, and observation into intuition. — excerpt from the curatorial text by Janek Owczarek Agata Popik (b. 1999, Zamość) is a visual artist and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (2025). Her practice combines painting, drawing, and object-based work. Popik has presented her work in the solo exhibitions “Chances of sleep are fifty-fifty” at Galeria Próznia in Szczecin (2023) and “Take me home” at Galeria Przeciąg in Warsaw (2025), as well as in numerous group exhibitions, including “My Pearls Spilled Out Along the Way” at Holešovická šachta in Prague (2026), “Think of Others.
