?️ When Orthodox Judaism denies a young man his Jewish identity, he sets out to uncover the truth of who he is. Along the way, he encounters echoes of his father’s similar experience years earlier and begins to grapple with questions of belonging. 'Son of a Seeker' is a deeply personal journey that explores what it means to continue being Jewish in the 21st century – a story of rupture, self-discovery, and the quiet strength of family support.

? As the director explains, this was a film he felt compelled to make, even without having all the answers. It captures the experience of believing you are one thing, only to be told you are not – and follows the journey that such a rupture sets in motion, as well as the subtle beauty found in family support during a profoundly challenging moment in life.

? Kai Balin is a filmmaker from Vancouver, Canada. While studying kinesiology at Western University (2015–2019), he became increasingly drawn to filmmaking and storytelling, often trading lectures for YouTube tutorials. After graduating, he spent several years living and traveling through India, East Africa, Morocco, Europe, the U.S., and Israel, where new creative paths emerged. His first short film, 'My 5 Year Video Project' (2024), is a personal, experimental montage documenting five years of spontaneous filming during a creative hiatus – capturing fragments of people, places, and emotions from that transformative period. Outside of filmmaking, Kai enjoys playing sports and lying down, staring at the ceiling, contemplating his entire existence.

"Son of a Seeker" to intymna, osobista opowieść o poszukiwaniu przynależności i o tym, co znaczy pozostać Żydem w XXI wieku – w świecie pełnym wątpliwości, pęknięć i granic wyznaczanych przez innych.

Jak mówi reżyser, film powstał z potrzeby pokazania doświadczenia, dla którego nie ma prostych odpowiedzi – momentu, w którym ktoś jest przekonany o swojej tożsamości, by nagle usłyszeć, że zostaje ona zakwestionowana. To opowieść o drodze, która zaczyna się w chwili tego pęknięcia, oraz o cichej sile rodzinnego wsparcia w czasie jednego z najtrudniejszych momentów w życiu.

? Kai Balin jest filmowcem pochodzącym z Vancouver w Kanadzie. Studiował kinezjologię na Western University (2015–2019), jednak z czasem coraz bardziej pociągało go opowiadanie historii za pomocą obrazu. Po ukończeniu studiów przez kilka lat podróżował i mieszkał m.in. w Indiach, Afryce Wschodniej, Maroku, Europie, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Izraelu.
Jego krótkometrażowy debiut "My 5 Year Video Project" (2024) to osobisty, eksperymentalny film – montaż pięciu lat spontanicznych nagrań, dokumentujących ludzi, miejsca i emocje z okresu twórczej przerwy. Poza filmem Kai lubi sport oraz długie chwile bezczynności spędzane na wpatrywaniu się w sufit i rozmyślaniu o sensie istnienia.
