Through the stories of Sojourner Truth, Harriet Bell Hayden, Louisa DeWolfe, and Harriet Tubman, we encounter ancestors who are not confined to the past but alive in our present, still moving through us to direct our future.Created by playwright Gail Burton, a Harvard-trained weaver of myth, memory, and liberation, a recipient of the Cambridge Peace Award and author of Muses, the work honors resilience, collective memory, and the transformative power of art. The play will feature performances by Dionne Latrice, Cherease Lamm, Chris Everett, and Zahra A. Belyea.After a successful appearance in Boston, MA in 2024 in collaboration with the Cultural Equity Incubator and MASARY Studios at Midway Artist Studios, the team is excited to present this moving and inspiring new work onsite at St. Mark's Church, the former home of the Black Gospel Window in Warren, RI, an historic coastal region of RI confronting its significant role in the transatlantic human trade. The production also partners with the Bristol Historical & Preservation Society (RI) to co-curate dramaturgical exhibits of the historical materials informing the work. A conversation with the playwright and collaborators will follow the performance.
