Vander Sluis transforms materials into immersive experiences that invite viewers to consider the passage of time and the delicate balance between order and chaos.Her work in this series, "Serious Make Believe," creates a dynamic space where imagination and gravity collide. The sculptures draw from the visual language of play – a towering arch, theatrical head, and monster-like figure – yet spring from lived experience. The work treats play as a way to hold both joy and grief at the same time.She says, “The source of my recent work was a long caregiving journey, during which my studio became a place to process grief while holding onto playfulness. This exhibit reflects my passage from that chapter into one of redefinition. Though rooted in the personal, the installation speaks to the universal poignancy of human life, where beauty and decay live side by side.”Garcia’s paintings often depict familiar places — lighthouses, houses, and landscapes — rendered with a sense of narrative and wonder that bridges realism and imagination. Within these carefully rendered settings, Garcia often introduces playful details that invite a closer look, rewarding viewers with unexpected moments of delight. He says, “Painting in oils, I create works that appear lifelike from a distance yet reveal expressive brushwork and mark-making up close.
