- **Event Name**: Willow Weaving Fish (Age 8+) Summer Holiday Workshops
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 13 Aug, 2026 at 10:00 am – Thu, 13 Aug, 2026 at 12:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Willow Weaving Fish. Join us for a creative and hands-on workshop where children aged 8+ can learn the art of willow weaving and create their very own fish to take home. Guided by experienced tutor Glenys Newton, participants will explore simple weaving techniques and can make as many fish as they like during the 2-hour session—perfect for building confidence and trying out their own ideas.

Working with natural willow is both fun and rewarding, and particularly suited to older children who enjoy making and experimenting with materials. Weaving involves threading, bending and shaping, helping to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Research shows that activities like weaving strengthen finger muscles and coordination, supporting important skills for writing and everyday tasks.

Creative activities like this also encourage problem-solving, patience and independent thinking, giving children the chance to take pride in what they create.

And perhaps just as importantly, it’s a fantastic way to get children away from screens and engaged in something real and tactile. Studies highlight that hands-on play supports children’s physical, cognitive and social development in ways that passive screen time cannot.

This relaxed and engaging workshop is ideal for curious makers who enjoy learning new skills and getting creative. No experience is needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to have a go!
This workshop is run by a DBS checked tutor and is suitable as a drop off workshop or for parents and carers to do with their children by booking their own ticket.

This workshop will be run by Glenys Newton a new tutor at Southern Maltings. She started basketry weaving following illness and used it as a form of recovery. She then went on to do a City and Guilds and has been weaving now for over 4 years. She makes creations from willow, from coffins to little stars and everything in between, and also works in schools, hospitals, prisons and in the community in a bid to share the craft, its benefits, as a way of bringing people together and, most importantly, for people to have fun!

Basketry is ancient, one of the oldest crafts, apparently, and speaks of the socio economic story of the land, in this country and across the world. She is inspired by the surrounding landscape and often incorporate hedgerow materials in with the willow along with wood and leather. She loves mending old baskets, hearing the stories behind the baskets and sending them back out into the world to live another day. She is also part of the Repair Café movement that strives to repair household items in a bid to stop them ending up in landfill.
