- **Event Name**: SNOW CAVE CAMPING!!!! MY 11th annual SNOW PARTY!!!!
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 20 Mar, 2026 at 10:00 am – Sun, 22 Mar, 2026 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: 11 YEARS in a row and I’m NOT STOPPING YET!!!!

THIS IS FREE AND FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO COME!!! Beginners-Experienced!!!! People who have never winter camped and for people who have!!!!
You dont have to sleep in a snowcave either!! You can bring a tent or even “cowboy camp” (sleep on the ground/ no tent depending on weather)

Its so close to where the bathrooms are and where your car is parked if you get cold you can easily hike down to your car and start it to keep you warm! I had to do this for about the first 4 years because I sadly didnt have the right setup- and didnt know how to feed myself properly so I always got sick, I have terrible acid reflux and after a long day of hard work with only eating crappy snacks my tummy would fight back! My car was like my safety blanket ? and because it was so close i wasnt afraid to step outta my comfort zone!!

ALSO- if you don’t have all this gear, have no FEAR!!! You can rent things you need from the Estes park mountain shop Or REI and Denver has several rental shops!!!!

We will be teaching important techniques and how to's and we will make sure each snow cave is safe for sleeping!

So don't hesitate if you have no idea how to- we will help you along the way! Also if you're interested in coming solo that's fine too you can make a small solo cave for yourself (just know it takes a bit longer)!!!

we are Building snow caves right before red rock lake in the snow drifts made by the wind coming across the lake!!!!!
(Less than 1/4 mile hike from car, warming hut and bathrooms) I'll go out Thursday and get photos up and I'll draw a map AND I'll be sure to leave a visible marker showing you where to turn off the main road into the trees. It will be easy to find us I promise! Very easy walking up the snow covered road- only a tiny part is into the trees where the drifts are!
GPS coordinates to red rock lake: 40.08183° N, 105.54141° W if you get to the lake you have gone too far, turn around and go back to where the wind would blow the snow off the lake! Wind almost always comes from the west!

There will be big drifts to work with by march!!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for MARCH 20-22!!!!

Here's some great info on sleeping in the snow.....

Go over this ^^^^^^

Also.... a list of what to bring: besides the normal snow clothes-

*SNOW SHOVELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!- big and small for pilling and for digging out. (Not everyone needs one so we could share but it's hard to work on your snowcave if no one has a shovel)

*a TARP big enough that you and your friends can sleep on. You lay your tarp down in the snow first and then all your bedding goes on top!

*2 sleeping pads- one of those closed foam cell pads that's made out foam they run 30-40$ (I rent for 8$) thermarest makes a good one.
And then your normal sleeping pad. Hopefully it has a winter rating on it R4 and above.... that will help with warmth as well. If it's an air pad with a rating of less than 4 you don't want to bring it. The air in the pad gets cold making you cold all night. The closed cell foam mattress is key in the snow if you don't have a winter rated pad, bring 2 closed cell pads. I use an r8 30$ pad from costco!

*sleeping bag.... now here it gets a little different for everyone. I'ts taken me 5 years but I have finally gotten a winter bag that keeps me warm- im always freezing and the rating on bags mean they will make sure you survive if the tenps get to the rating but they will NOT be warm or cozy. I now have -20 marmot thats the best bag ive ever slept in!!! Your snow caves will stay inside about 30-35 degrees. Even though it's 6 degrees outside your cave will remain in the 30’s. The 2 pads I put down also help make sure my bag keeps me warm. I also bring a small packable down blanket (Costco) to stuff inside my bag this adds about 10-15 more degrees of warmth to my setup. Then like the article I shared above: right before bed I get my nalgene and fill it with boiling water! This helps TREMENDOUSLY with foot warmth and overall warmth in your bag ( I like to add a tea bag so in the morning I've got a nice Luke warm tea ready to rehydrate with!)

***EXTRA DRY CLOTHES! Building snowcaves gets you a bit wet or damp.... it's hard work and the snow is always going into some hole in your clothing? the article above suggested to take off your thermal layers when digging so they stay dry. But I get cold so I just bring an extra pair of thermals for when I'm done making my cave.

*WOOD!!!! we can have fires at this location!!!!! So we will need to bring enough wood for the weekend to keep a fire for us! I have new this year a solostove bonfire beast! Someone brought one a couple years ago and ive finally invested in one! Its amazing how little wood you need and how little ash it creates while pumping out great heat!!! I cant wait to show y’all! But still bring wood!

***A SLED!!!! Sleds are the BEST invention to carry stuff up in the snow! Find a sled with holes on the edges so you can bungee or tie a rope around your stuff so it doesn't go anywhere! Sleds really make the weight more bearable and allow for more toys and comfort foods!

*FOOD! There is a fire so we can cook!!!!! Dehydrated meals are light and easy but I enjoy bringing legit food up here because the trek from the car is so short and easy!!!!! Also no cooler needed we have SNOW! It's the best insulator!!! AND I bring a double cooktop stove with propane and pans so we can cook legit warm meals on it! I love making nice big pots of chili and some chicken and dumplings! Its always the best to eat hearty meals they help keep you warm, especially after a hard days work digging your cave!

*WARMERS OF ALL KINDS! Toe warmers for your feets! During the day if temps are super cold. And then at night and especially while you sleep they are super helpful! Also they make warmers that last 18 hrs and are big squares! I LOVE THOSE!!! I keep one in my pocket during the day and i put that same one inside my beanie on top of my head while I sleep! (That my friends is my warming ?) also what helps keep my feet warm is a foam square (like the ones they make for kids in big puzzle squares, also costco sells a pack of like 12 puzzle squares to use in the garage on the floor- they work amazing at keeping your boots from freezing in the snow all day! Closed foam cell pads work too but I found they are a bit pricier.

*tea lights or candles and a little foil! These you set up inside your cave for 2 reasons!!! One because surprisingly enough they cut the temps and make it a bit warmer like 35 hahah. And then the most super important function it has... it's an oxygen signifier. If your candle has problems lighting, your cave needs a better vent hole. However I have learned when digging into snow drifts this really isnt an issue as the snow has tons of air trapped in it. Its when you pile snow, let it sit and then dig a hole out you really need a sufficient vent for air. This method is called a Quinzee and its a whole hell of a lot more work than digging into snow drifts!

*flashlights, lantern, some sort of light!

There will be a fire pit and stove top, but the jet boils and mini stoves will help make tea/hot chocolate/coffee faster, and hot water before bed go much quicker!

Getting supper EXCITED!!!!!
