- **Event Description**: Join us this week for a planting/weeding event at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center's Pollinator Garden!About this EventJoin us this Sunday to help us cut and pull out invasive plants from the Pollinator Garden at the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center. We will be removing plants such as Mugwort and Phragmites that have been overtaking the native pollinator plants the staff have been trying to cultivate.This program is available for all ages with adult supervision over the age of 14.Meeting Time: 9:30am to 12:00pmParking Instructions: You will either be heading south on Meadowbrook Pkwy or west on Ocean Pkwy. These are the only ways to get there. Follow the signs for the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center and park near the building. If a booth attendant is on duty, let them know you are there to volunteer. Do NOT pay. This is NOT West End .Backround Information: : Years ago, West End 1 and West End 2 were once key destinations at Jones Beach. Thousands of cars would fill up West End 2 on a typical summer weekend and West End 1 would need to open to accommodate even more park patrons. However, a number of factors altering the geography of the beach resulted in the “repurposing” of West End 2 into a small bathing beach and the establishment of the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center. Part of this project was to remove large swathes of parking lot pavement and to convert the area back into a seaside grassland, hence one of the projects being a pollinator garden being established in from of the Nature Center as a way to cultivate native pollinator plants and act as an educational resource to park patrons.We have our hands full in this area! We will be removing invasive plants from this spot. Mugwort is rampant and so is crown vetch and phragmites. This time we will be focusing near the wind turbine and hope to plant some native pollinator plants gotten from Bethpage State Park!Natural Hazards: Please follow our standard precautions for ticks! Wear light-colored pants, double socks, tuck pant legs into the socks and use a lint roller on all surfaces when done. Tick sprays, especially permethrin, work well!
