Overview of Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University
The mission of the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University is to study and promote human flourishing by integrating rigorous empirical social science with insights from philosophy, theology, and the humanities in a deeply cross-disciplinary approach. The Program leads major projects such as the Global Flourishing Study, conducts research studies on topics such as forgiveness, suffering, and love, and advances impact-focused initiatives in various areas including K-12 schools, universities, churches, workplaces, government, families, and AI. The Program, founded in 2016 by Harvard epidemiology professor Tyler Vanderweele, includes a team of researchers from disciplines such as public health, education, philosophy, theology, sociology, and medicine. Research is grounded on the measurement of core domains of human flourishing including meaning & purpose, character & virtue, happiness & life satisfaction, physical & mental health, and close social relationships. Through its research and applied initiatives, the Program seeks to generate knowledge and practical tools that help individuals and communities around the world flourish.
