Every year, Butterfly Conservation runs the Big Butterfly Count to help build a picture of how butterflies are doing across the UK - something that tells us a lot about the health of our environment.When and where will we meet?This is a drop‑in session, so you can arrive at any time during the session. I’ll be based at a set meeting point throughout.We’ll be in a quieter area of the park (such as a meadow), as this is where butterflies are more likely to be found, rather than near a main entrance or car park.· · Address: Bloxwich Community Orchard Tiny Forest. Ashbourne Rd, Bloxwich, Walsall WS3 3QQExact meeting point (what3words): ///losses.watch.mixerDate: 31.07.26Time: 1pm – 3pmFacilities: There are no toilets.What will we do?During the session, we’ll spend 15 minutes in a suitable spot watching and counting butterflies. You’ll record how many of each type you see, helping contribute to a nationwide survey.No experience is needed - ID sheets will be provided to help you. You can record your sightings on a mobile device or using the paper sheets available on the day.To prepare, you may wish to download the free Butterfly Conservation app to log sightings straight away or add them to the online map later. If you’d also like to record other wildlife, you can download iNaturalist and set up an account in advance, although paper ID sheets will also be available.What should I wear?Please wear comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for the weather. As we’ll be exploring areas with long grass, there is a risk of ticks, as well as thorns, stinging plants and nettles, so long‑sleeved tops and full-length trousers are recommended.Bring extra layers, a waterproof if needed and sun protection such as a hat or sunscreen. Please check the weather forecast before attending - if extreme weather makes the session unsafe, it will be cancelled.Any other information?Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer at all times. Children remain the responsibility of their parent or carer throughout the session and must be supervised at all times.If you need to cancel your tickets, please let us know as soon as possible so we can plan the session properly and offer your place to someone else.If you’ve booked tickets for others, please pass on any information we send you, as only the person who made the booking will receive emails.
