Ganden Buddhist Centre, 5 North Bridge, Halifax, United Kingdom
Mindfulness in this context is the ability to hold in mind a meaningful and constructive object. For example, if we decide that we will treat a person who normally irritates us with kindness and respect, and then when we actually meet them we are able to remember our decision instead of just reacting in our normal irritated way, it is mindfulness that does the remembering. Mindfulness is important in all aspects of our life. For example, if our mindfulness lapses when we are driving we are likely to have an accident, or if our mindfulness is poor while we are studying we will forget everything we learn. Mindfulness is particularly important in our spiritual practices. The key to successful meditation is strong mindfulness.
On this course we will first look at how to improve our mindfulness in general, both in meditation and in our daily life. Then we will look at a specific application of mindfulness based one of Buddha’s most important Sutras, called The Four Close Placements of Mindfulness: mindfulness of the body, feelings, mind and phenomena. Most of our emotional problems come from an unskilful way of relating to our body, feelings and mind, but by learning to focusing our attention on these aspects of our being in a realistic and concentrated way we can change the way we relate to ourselves and the world. Seeing clearly and directly what is going on in our mind untangles the complicated and painful mess our confusion has created.
Classes consist of guided meditations and a short and practical talk on how to apply Buddhist wisdom to the day to day problems we face in our busy modern lives. There will be time for questions. These classes are suitable for everyone, whether you have meditated before or this is your first time. No special clothing is necessary and people can sit on chairs or meditation cushions.
