The Round our Way team is delighted to offer an opportunity to follow the Louisa Fennell trail around Wakefield . Compare the views of the past, as painted by Louisa, to the scenes of the city today.
You will have seen the panels around the city painted by Victorian artist Louisa Fennell which show how Wakefield looked back in the early 1860's. These are based on sketches she did as a child and, if you have stopped to read the panels you will know some of the stories linked to the history of each picture.
But there is so much more to tell. Like, how Louisa's family were linked to the Wakefield Blind Society and the Waterton's of Walton Hall and how her sketch of the Bakehouse links her to Florence Beaumont, a political figure on the national stage. Join Sarah Cobham and the team as we follow in the footsteps of Wakefield's most enigmatic artist and discover more about herstory.
This is an outdoor event and will take place whatever the weather. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for city walking. Meet at the front entrance to the cathedral in the precinct. Arrive a few minues before the scheduled start time.
The walk will last approximately 90 minutes, but walk times do vary by 15 /20 minutes either way. We like to allow sufficient time for photos and questions.

Raising funds for Blue Plaques for Women
This event is one of a series of walks and talks , all being done to raise money for blue plaques for women. Did you know that each new plaque costs between £700 and £800? There are currently more than 33 plaques with dedicated female names in Wakefield, which makes us the top city in the UK to recognise our Forgotten Women BUT there are lots more women whose stories need to be told and acknowledged. Hear about some of them on the tour and help us to raise the much needed funds for our next plaque.
Learn more about the Forgotten Women of Wakefield project and see how important it is that women are recognised for their achievements, and help Wakefield to become the first city with true blue plaque parity
