Please bring along an extract of your own work no more than 1000 words.  If you are able to bring extra hard copies for others to read along please do so.  3 should be enough for our first meeting.  This can be fact, fiction, prose, poetry, or any other work that you would like feedback for.  

Please be mindful of other attendees with the content of your work.  

Content Boundaries

Hate Speech & Harassment: Bigotry, racism, homophobia, and targeted harassment are off-limits.

Unmarked Extreme Triggers: If your manuscript contains deeply distressing themes (e.g., suicide, extreme violence, sexual assault), you are required to give a content warning/trigger warning before sharing.

Trolling & Spam: Self-promotion or generating pieces for the sole purpose of shocking or "trolling" the group to disrupt the creative space is strictly prohibited.

You will have the opportunity to read out your work and receive feedback from all the other attendees.  You will also have the opportunity to critique other writers work.

How to Critique (A rough guide)

Focus On Pacing and Tension: Did the story drag at any point? Did the tension peak or dip when it shouldn't have?

Characterization: Are the characters' voices consistent? Are their motivations clear and believable?

Show, Don't Tell: Highlight sections where the author might be over-explaining and where more sensory details could be added.

Structure and Flow: Are transitions between scenes or chapters jarring? Does the opening hook the reader?

Respect The Writers Vision: Engage with the text on its own terms. Don't suggest how you would have written the story; instead, evaluate if the author achieved what they set out to do.

Be Specific and Actionable: Don't just say a piece is "good" or "bad". Explain exactly why a section didn't work and offer a potential solution.

Match the Drafting Stage: Clarify whether the author is sharing a rough first draft or a polished manuscript. Minor tweaks and grammar checks aren't necessary for an early draft.
