Join us on Thursday, June 12 at 6 PM to learn how historic preservationists and archivists are making a difference in Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

About the Event

Representatives from the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County and Buncombe County Special Collections will discuss how historic preservation can support communities in the wake of disaster. This conversation will be moderated by Wake Forest Historic Preservation Planner, Paige Regna. Regna will help us understand how hazard mitigation planning can protect historic sites in our community.

Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County (PSABC)

PSABC is leading recovery efforts by connecting historic property owners to technical support and preservation grants. Just weeks after the storm, they also began a county-wide survey of historic properties. By the end of this survey project, PSABC hopes to have a much better understanding about the impact of Hurricane Helene on historic resources, documentation of places that have been lost and damaged and a document that can live on to tell the story of this storm and the people and places it impacted.

Buncombe County Special Collections (BCSC)

In early 2025, BCSC launched Come Hell or High Water a community memory project to collect, preserve, and present the stories and digital record of the Western North Carolina communities impacted by Tropical Storm Helene. Through the project, they hoped to create a pathway for community reflection, healing, and long-term development of community memory not afforded victims of past disasters (like the Great Flood of 1916).
