About the event

Mt. Ka’ala - Difficulty Hard
🚨PLEASE READ ALL🚨

Linkup & Safety Brief: 6:00 am
Start Time: 6:15am
Parking 🅿️: Meet at the very end of Waianae Valley Rd., you will park your car here at the dirt lot and meet here. (You can Google search Mt. Kaala trailhead as well if the link to maps isn’t working). Due to limited space consider carpooling. Do not leave any valuables in your car.

Level: Hard
Time: 6-8hrs depending on pace and distance.
Elevation Gain: 5,311 (the highest mountain on Oahu at 4,025 ft)
Distance: 7 miles roundtrip

Description:

Rated hard due to the consistent elevation gain to get to the summit. Moderate the first 2 miles going through a paved exposed road and the lower forest. After the paved section the trail is mostly shaded. The trail gets harder as you ascend up the ridge to summit to the mountain. There’s a few large boulders, one with a ladder drilled in to help. Lots of rope sections to assist in the steep sections. At the summit we go through a bog with planks to walk across this flat nature preserve with plants and fauna unique to Mt. Kaala to enjoy.

This is an out and back hike, where you can turn around and go back the same way you came in. You can turn around at anytime you don’t feel comfortable, just be mindful of the trail so you can walk yourself back to your car, you will not have an escort to walk you back so please speak up sooner rather later as the trail only gets more progressively harder. The trail is pretty obvious, you can download the trail map and navigate on AllTrails app as well.

There’s beautiful views of the Waianae mountains, North Shore and all the way to Diamond Head on a clear day.
