A lineal descendant of the area, he wore many hats along the Wai‘anae Coast, advocating for improving conditions for Native Hawaiians and the environment. Hopfe was a self-taught multimedia artist specializing in stone works, carving, and restoration.Kū'īlioloa is a kupua, a demigod who could assume the form of a man or dog. Translating to the long dog of Kū, it also incorporates the four primary gods Kū, the god of war. The place name Kāneʻīlio represents Kāne, while Lono's realm is expressed through the clouds and heavens, reflecting one of the heiau's primary functions as a place of navigation. Kū'īlioloa is the only heiau in Hawai'i bordered on three sides of the ocean, Kanaloa's domain. In 2021, Kingdom Pathways Director Carmen Guzman-Simpliciano welcomed Mayor Rick Blangiardi to Waiʻanae for a site visit that helped secure improvement funding for Pōkaʻī Bay, Keaʻau Beach Park, and Mākaha. During the visit, ʻAnakala Hanale presented Nā Hoʻolele as hoʻokupu to Mayor, the City, and the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, honoring Kūʻīlioloa Heiau and sharing its moʻolelo inspiring awareness, respect & stewardship of this sacred place. Honoring the many heroes who have paved the way before us and those who will carry on the kuleana ahead, the sculture depicts a guiding kanaka holding a navigation chart. We are honored and blessed to celebrate the long awaited commemoration of this community art and education project-- Nā Hoʻokele-- serving as a reminder to respect and mālama this wahi pana, while continuing to guide our community forward.---*Light refreshments will be provided.
