Anfang Februar 1968 erschien Jethro Tull erstmals unter diesem Namen im berühmten Marquee Club in der Wardour Street, London. Schnell baute die Band dort und in den vielen anderen kleinen Blues-Clubs und Pubs in ganz England eine Fangemeinde auf und erlangte beim Sunbury Jazz and Blues Festival im Sommer 1968 breite mediale und öffentliche Anerkennung, wo sie der Überraschungshit der Veranstaltung waren.
Tull nahm mit der Originalbesetzung - bestehend aus Anderson, Cornick, Bunker und Abrahams - auf und veröffentlichten ihr erstes Album „This Was“ später in diesem Jahr. Nach dem Weggang von Mick Abrahams und seiner Ablösung durch Martin Barre, wechselten im Laufe der Jahrzehnte etwa dreißig weitere Musiker, von denen einige für einige Monate, andere für die längere Zeit blieben.
Obwohl Ian Anderson heute seinen eigenen Namen in Verbindung mit den Tull-Auftritten und dem Repertoire verwendet, hat die Marke Jethro Tull bis heute Bestand. Als Autor, Produzent, Flötist, Sänger und Gelegenheitsgitarrist tritt Anderson mit der Band jedes Jahr typischerweise in 80 - 100 Shows in vielen Ländern der Welt auf.
Ian Anderson wird von Tull-Bandmusikern David Goodier (Bass), John O’Hara (Keyboards), Timothy Jack (Gitarre) und Scott Hammond (Schlagzeug) begleitet.
