- **Event Description**: In partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, John Boyd Thacher State Park is hosting a Hike Away the Dark sunset luminary walk on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 6:30pm-9:00pm. 

Interested participants can pre-register here: https://supporting.afsp.org/hikeawaythedark. Day of registration will also be accepted.  

All donations to this event will go toward research, education programs, advocacy, and support for those affected by suicide in the Capital Region.  

6:30-7:00pm: Arrive at the Thacher Park Visitor Center Located at 830 Thacher Park Road, Voorheesville, NY 12186. Park your vehicle (no fee after 5:30pm), register, and gather at the Visitor Center where there will be an opportunity to decorate a luminary bag to honor a loved one or your own mental health journey, interact with area community organizations/partners, purchase AFSP merchandise, and enjoy a campfire and local food trucks (Annabel's Pizza and Uncle Gino’s Ices).
Accessible parking is available at the Visitor Center.

7:15pm: Pre-remarks from speakers, moment of silence, and step off for hike. The trail will be lit up and volunteers will be placed along the route to guide participants. Hikers will place their luminary bags and tea lights along the route as they hike.

7:30pm: Sunset
Hike information: 0.75-mile hike at 1136ft of elevation. Trail tread material is compacted soil with a base layer of shale. The hiking route crosses two wooden elevated pedestrian bridges that are 10ft long and 8ft wide. There is a step to get on and off the bridges. The hiking route will ascend a flight of five stone steps at the end. The hike ends at the Overlook at which point hikers can wait for a shuttle back to the Visitor Center, or hike back along the luminary trail. All are welcome to stay at the Visitor Center until 9:00pm to enjoy a fire and s'mores. 

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Leashed dogs are allowed and must be under the control of their owner at all times.

John Boyd Thacher State Park is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with eight reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
