A DAY OF PLANT PROPAGATION
Saturday, May 16 | 9:00- 3:00 p.m.
Instructors: Matthew Askey & John T. Manion
Location: Blount County Library
Event fee: $80 - includes all materials (seeds, cuttings, potting medium, labels, hormone, etc.)

Whether you are a novice or experienced grower, join us to gain a solid foundation of knowledge about propagating native plant species. Propagating native plants using various methods is the most economical way to increase their numbers. However, propagation is not without its challenges, and having the right foundation of knowledge and basic set of skills can go a long way toward success. This in-depth class will consist of both classroom lecture and a hands-on workshop, in which we apply the techniques learned. Included in the class will be both propagation from seed or spores, and vegetative (asexual) propagation. Topics related to seed propagation will cover effective and ethical seed collection, seed cleaning and processing, seed treatments to promote germination, proper sowing techniques, and care for newly emerged seedlings. Each student will have the opportunity to propagate and take home their selected plants.

There are circumstances where propagating native plants vegetatively (asexually) can produce plants faster and more efficiently than by seed. Topics related to vegetative propagation will cover advantages of vegetative propagation, basic plant biology related to this form of growing plants, and methods such as stem and root cuttings, grafting, micro-propagation, crown division and layering. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own cuttings and divisions to take home and add to their garden.

For this class, participants have the opportunity to purchase our favorite reference for native plant propagation: Jan Midgley’s Native Plant Propagation - sixth edition. This is a self-published manual and may be purchased ($30) when registering for the class.

"I had no idea a Native Plant Propagation course would be so fun! We used an immersion blender to scarify seeds, watched a how-to session on setting milkweed seeds on fire and mastered the seed sifter. We debated the pros and cons of adding mycorrhizae to plant media. We even talked about germination blotter paper.”
Rita Venable - author, Butterflies of Tennessee.
