Laura Schmidt and Gordon Jones
Get inspired by the art on view in our galleries, and learn the art of copper enameling with exhibiting artist Laura Schmidt and accompanying artist Gordon Jones.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll begin by designing, cleaning, and cutting copper blanks in preparation for enameling. Then, using a kiln, you’ll explore techniques such as layering enamel powders and paints, counter-enameling, and incorporating stencils, stamps, and sgraffito to create detailed surface designs.
Over the course of the three-hour session, you’ll have the opportunity to create several unique pieces of wearable art while gaining a deeper understanding of the tools, materials, and techniques involved in this vibrant and expressive process.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Laura Schmidt and Gordon Jones are self-taught, mixed media artists who founded Sibling Reverie Studios after retiring from careers in law and the military, respectively. This brother-and-sister duo discovered copper enameling in 2019 at the John C. Campbell Folk School and have continued to grow their skills through a variety of local and regional art classes over the years.
Schmidt was awarded the Judy Oswald Memorial Award in the Suffolk Art League’s Annual Juried Exhibition in 2023. Jones has received art education scholarships from both the John C. Campbell Folk School and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and he currently works and teaches part-time at the Suffolk Art Gallery.
