MONOLOUGES

Everyone auditioning should memorize one of these to exemplify their acting skills:

ANDREW (age 57 – 65). He is the complete man, isn’t he? A man of reason and imagination; of potent passions and bright fancies. He’s joyous, he’s unrepentant. His weapons are the openness of a child and the cunning of a pike and armed with these he faces out the black bloody terrors of living. For me personally he is a man who is prepared to live his life without the crutch of domestic tension. You see, at heart, I’m rather a solitary man. An arrangement of clouds, the secret mystery of landscape, a game of intrigue and revelation, mean more to me than people- even the people I’m supposed to be in love with. I’ve never met a woman to whom the claims of intellect were as absolute as they are to me. For a long time I was reticent about all this, knowing that people would mistake my adroit heart for one of polished stone. But now I don’t care anymore. I’m out in the open. I’ve turned my whole life into one great work of happy invention.

MILO (age 28 – 35). No. Most people want someone to live with. But you have no life to give anyone—only tricks and the shadows of long ago. Take a look at yourself, Andrew, and ask yourself a few simple questions about your attachment to the English detective story. Perhaps you might come to realize that the only world you can inhabit is a dead world—a country house world where peers and colonels die in their studies; where butlers steal the port, and pert parlor maids cringe, weeping, behind green baize doors. It’s a world of coldness and class hatred, and two- dimensional characters who are not expected to communicate; it’s a world where only
the amateurs ever win, and where to be a foreigner is to be automatically a figure of fun. To be puzzled is all. Forgive me for taking Marguerite to a life where people try to understand. To put it shortly, your detective stories are the normal recreation of a snobbish, outdated, life-hating, ignoble mind. I’ll get that fur coat now. I presume it is Marguerite’s, unless, of course, you’ve taken to transvestism as a substitute for non-performance.

ABOUT THE CHARACTERS

Andrew Wyke, is a famous British mystery writer of around 60 who is very impressed with himself in all facets of his life. He is obsessed with playing games of all types and considers himself a master of most, if not all, the games he subjects others to. He seems, at face value, to be a calm, considerate person but can, when provoked delve into a rather sinister persona. He must be physically lithe and able to move quickly about the stage and bend and stoop as necessary. He deems himself a wonderful lover of women and has been married to a much younger woman for several years. Enter the problem. Must have several distinct British accents and different voices.

Milo Tindle, is the owner of a travel agency in London and has fallen in love with Andrew’s wife. He and Marguerite stay in London most of the time, but he has just purchased a small home in the local village so they can be near when she has to come home to Andrew. He is some 30 years younger than Andrew and has nowhere near the money of the older man. He is the son of an Italian immigrant even though he was born and raised in England and considers himself to be English. He is not particularly adept at playing games. Milo should be able to move easily about stage and up and down stairs without getting out of breath. He must have several distinct British accents and voices as well.

SYNOPSIS

The ultimate game of cat and mouse is played out in a cozy English country house owned by celebrated mystery writer, Andrew Wyke. Invited guest Milo Tindle, a young rival who shares Wyke’s love for games, declares his intention to run off with Wyke’s wife. The two men devise an elaborate revenge/power game; through their style and cunning, the stakes continue to rise, leading to the play’s inexorable, heart-stopping finish.
