Few periods in European history are as familiar, and yet as misunderstood, as the Viking Age. Images of warriors and raids have long shaped how the Vikings are remembered, but they reveal only a fragment of a far more intricate and varied past. Who were the Vikings beyond these enduring myths, how did their societies function, and what forces drove their expansion across the Baltic and beyond?

The Viking Age, from about 750 to 1050, saw the Norse world reach from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. For centuries, however, the Vikings have been viewed through interpretations shaped by later societies, which rarely reflect the richness or sophistication of their culture. This lecture explores the Vikings through their own political life, their cosmology and religion, and the material world that structured their daily existence. Although often associated with seaborne violence, the Vikings also carried ideas, goods, technologies, and beliefs to the peoples they encountered, and were themselves changed through these contacts.

Professor Neil Price is one of the leading scholars of the Viking Age and Professor of Archaeology at Uppsala University. His research has played a major role in broadening modern understanding of Norse society, highlighting religion, belief, identity, and social practice. He is the author of several influential works, including The Viking Way and the widely acclaimed Children of Ash and Elm, which was named a Times Book of the Year 2020.

Professor Price also directs the Centre of Excellence, The World in the Viking Age, at Uppsala University, an international research initiative that examines the scale and diversity of the Viking world. His work shows how Scandinavia and the Baltic region were closely connected to wider networks that reached Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Throughout the Viking Age, the Baltic Sea served as an important shared space that linked communities through travel, trade, and cultural exchange, shaping both local societies and the broader Norse world.

In this lecture, Professor Price offers a fresh perspective on Viking history that seeks to understand the Vikings on their own terms. They appear not as fixed figures of legend, but as active participants in an interconnected and changing world, shaped by the societies they encountered, including those of the Baltic region.

The lecture will be delivered in English.
