For several decades, Lithuanian photography has featured in international exhibitions, festivals, museum collections, book fairs and academic research. However, its visibility abroad depends on specific individuals, institutions, publications, networks, translations, the accessibility of archives, and consistent engagement with an international audience. The spread of Virgilijus Šonta’s work raises the question: why do some artists gain recognition during their lifetime, while others only enter the broader art scene several decades after their death? What does missed or delayed recognition mean for the author, the interpretation of their work, and the history of photography as a whole? How does a photographer become visible beyond the borders of their own country? What role do retrospective exhibitions, access to archives and research, institutional recognition and international partnerships play in this process? What steps should be taken to make Lithuanian photography more visible internationaly?
