Valter Soosalu on Eesti muusikamaastikul erilise käekirjaga looja ja interpreet, kelle loominguline ampluaa ulatub klassikalisest muusikast eksperimentaalsemate vormideni.

Viljandi Kitarrifestivalil toob laulja, instrumentalisti ja koorijuhina tuntud Valter Soosalu fookusesse harpejji – 2007. aastal Ameerika leiutaja Tim Meeksi poolt välja töötatud elektrilise keelpilli, mille kõla ja mängutehnika ühendavad kitarri ja klahvpilli omadused. Soosalu avastas harpejji internetis ning tundis kohe, et see instrument pakub midagi täiesti unikaalset. "Selle peal saab rakendada kõike, mis on hea klahvpillil, ja kõike, mis on hea kitarril, ka piirangud on sarnased. Kuigi harpejjit võib ju vaadata kui klahvpilli ja kitarri ristandit, on ta ikkagi üks hoopis omaette asi," selgitab Soosalu. ??

“2019. aastal oli maailmas umbes 500 harpejji’t. Sel ajal polnud kogu Baltikumis ühtegi kohapeal saadaval. On väga huvitav areneda koos uue instrumendiga, mida keegi veel isegi õpetada ei oska. Olen tänu harpejjile ka iseenda kohta päris palju õppinud ja tundub, et see teekond on alles alguses,” kirjeldab ta oma kogemust.

Viljandi Kitarrifestivalil avab Soosalu oma pilli päritolu, eripärasid ja mängutehnikaid. Kavas on nii seni õpitud teosed kui ka originaallooming, pakkudes publikule sissevaadet tema muusikasse ja loomingulistesse otsingutesse. Alates 2020. aastast on Soosalu harpejji tootjafirma Marcodi Musical Productsi esindusartist ning korraldab oma Youtube’i kanalil koolitusi ning pillitutvustusi.

Valter Soosalu is a distinctive composer and performer on the Estonian music scene, whose artistic range spans from classical music to more experimental forms.

? At the Viljandi Guitar Festival, Soosalu—known as a singer, instrumentalist, and choir conductor—will spotlight the harpejji, an electric string instrument developed in 2007 by American inventor Tim Meeks. Blending characteristics of both the guitar and keyboard, the harpejji offers a unique playing technique and sound. Soosalu first discovered the instrument online and was immediately captivated by its potential. “You can apply everything that's great about a keyboard and everything that's great about a guitar—but its limitations are similar as well. While it may seem like a hybrid of the two, the harpejji is truly in a league of its own,” he explains. ??

“As of 2019, there were only about 500 harpejjis worldwide, and not a single one in the Baltics. It’s fascinating to evolve alongside an instrument so new that no one can even teach it yet. Through the harpejji, I’ve learned a lot about myself, and it feels like this journey is only just beginning,” Soosalu shares.

At Viljandi Guitar Festival, he will explain about the instrument’s origins, unique characteristics, and playing techniques. The program will feature pieces he has studied so far as well as original compositions, offering the audience a glimpse into his music and creative explorations. Since 2020, Soosalu has been an official artist for Marcodi Musical Products, the company that manufactures the harpejji, and regularly conducts workshops and instrument showcases on his YouTube channel.
