Full Program – Vocalists and Pianists | $550
Reduced Program – Pianists Only (No Acting Class) | $428

This intensive workshop is designed for adult singers with an interest in contemporary art song, cabaret performance, and early 20th-century musical theatre. Some previous vocal training and performing experience would be an asset but is not compulsory. Adult pianists with an interest in collaborative work with singers and with some experience in art song and musical theatre are also welcome to participate.
The course encompasses daily masterclasses, lessons with faculty, seminars in the history of cabaret in Europe, classes in acting & performance practice, and a performance to conclude the week. Pianists may opt out of the Acting & Performance Practice class for a reduced tuition rate.
Sessions run daily from 10:00am to 5pm, with breaks throughout the day, in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall. Performances include the VCM Cabaret performance on Saturday, Aug 14, at 2pm and the Faculty Cabaret on Wednesday, Aug 11, at 5:30pm in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall.
The faculty brings a wealth of experience in a wide range of genres, from opera and avant-garde music theatre to cabaret and contemporary styles, and will work with the singers individually and in masterclass to develop their confidence and polish their performance as singing actors. Pianists will work with at least one singer and receive coaching on creative collaboration, including arranging and improvisation.
The program is limited to 15 singers and 15 pianists; early registration is advised. Singers do not have to register with a pianist; a collaborative partner will be assigned. In the event of a lack of collaborative partners, a professional collaborative pianist will be provided. Repertoire suggestions will be sent out to participants in advance of the start of the program.
Please note that this program is open to B.C. residents only, as it is an ‘in person’ course. If, due to COVID regulations, we are obliged to move to online instruction, it might be possible to accept some non B.C. residents, space permitting.
