Celebrate America's 251st birthday with one of Vero Beach's most cherished 4th of July traditions.

Every Independence Day morning around 8:00 a.m., hundreds of swimmers, paddleboarders, kayakers, and families gather at the S.S. Breconshire (the Boiler Wreck) for a champagne toast beneath the American flag that proudly flies from the bow.

What began decades ago as a birthday swim gradually evolved into a July 4th tradition that the Sunrunners helped grow and share with the community. What was once a small gathering of fewer than 20 people has grown into an annual celebration of more than 1,000 participants.

Whether you swim, paddle, float, kayak, or simply enjoy watching from the beach, everyone is welcome.

What to Know
🌊 The wreck is approximately 1/4 mile offshore. On many mornings, the water is so clear you can see the bottom the entire way.

🤿 Masks, snorkels, fins, and flotation devices are welcome.

🏄 Paddleboards and kayaks are encouraged (they also come in handy for carrying the champagne!).

📍 Meet on the beach behind Ocean Grill or Costa d'Este.

🚗 Parking is available in Sexton Plaza. The Ocean Grill overflow lot also offers parking for a fee.

🥂 This is a BYOB gathering, although there's usually plenty of champagne to share.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families and kids are always welcome. Bring your favorite legal beverage and enjoy the morning together.

Please do not stand on the wreck or tie onto the flagpole.

The SS Breconshire has rested beneath the Atlantic for more than 130 years, and the American flag that flies from its bow stands in memory of Mike Blatus and his dedication to protecting Vero Beach's reefs.

Let's keep this beautiful tradition going by using common sense, looking out for one another, and leaving the wreck just as we found it.

There is no registration, no RSVP, and no entry fee.

Just show up, bring your friends and family, and celebrate Independence Day with one of Vero Beach's most unique community traditions.
