Signature Speaker Series: What’s it all about Elizabeth Gilbert? Travel identity or the search for Social Justice?
Travel is a quest with a particular pattern: departure, adventure, and return. It is made up of an outer journey to learn about others and an inner journey to learn about one’s self. Such journeys and quests become a very personal form of storytelling when travellers share their stories of adventure as Elizabeth Gilbert did in Eat, Pray, Love.
But is Gilbert’s story an example of travel writing or is it a self-help manual? And if it’s the latter, is it merely an uplifting pop culture phenomenon or is it actually a distracting fairy tale that masks the struggles women continue to face in the search for equality?
Reema Faris, from Simon Fraser University, will explore travel, identify and contemporary social justice in a public talk at Okanagan College as part of the Vernon Campus’ Signature Speaker Series.
