Green Fields of America
Celebrating their 40th anniversary, The Green Fields of America is an ensemble that showcases some of Irish America's finest traditional performing artists. Formed in Philadelphia by musician and folklorist Mick Moloney, Green Fields of America was created to present, and subsequently tour, some of Irish America’s finest musicians and dancers. It was the first group on either side of the Atlantic to bring together Irish vocal, instrumental, and dance traditions on the concert and festival stage revealing a hidden Irish America.
Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts a record five times, the Green Fields has performed at venues all over America, including Carnegie Hall, Wolf Trap, The Smithsonian Institution, The Festival of American Folklife (now the Smithsonian Folklife Festival), the Milwaukee Irish Fest, and The National Folk Festival.
Membership in Green Fields has evolved over time, with Mick Moloney as its consistent presence. Current members include Mick Moloney (banjo, guitar, mandolin and vocals), Billy McComiskey (button-accordion), Athena Tergis (fiddle), Liz Hanley (fiddle and vocals), Brenda Castles (concertina), and Niall O’Leary (Irish dance and spoons).
