BIO:
David Keplinger directs the MFA Program in Creative Writing at American University and has taught in the Department of Literature since 2007. In spring 2025 he was awarded the Joseph Brodsky Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and will reside at the Academy studios in Trastevere from August 2025 until January 2026. David is the author of eight collections of poetry, most recently Ice (Milkweed Editions, 2023), which studies the frozen bodies of Pleistocene animals revealed under melting permafrost in Yakutia. Other poetry books include The World to Come and Another City (Milkweed Editions, 2018), which won the 2019 Rilke Prize. He has published six volumes of translations from the Danish and the German, recently Carsten René Nielsen’s Forty-One Objects, which was a finalist for the 2020 National Translation Prize, and Wisp by Jan Wagner, forthcoming from Milkweed Editions in 2026. Over the years, David’s work has been awarded two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Colorado Book Award, the Emily Dickinson Prize from the Poetry Society of America, and Mary Oliver chose his first collection for the T.S. Eliot Award. He was certified in teaching Mindfulness from Tara Brach’s and Jack Kornfield’s Mindfulness Meditation Teaching Certification Program in 2022. That year, he founded The Mindfulness Initiative at AU (MIAU) to gather students and members of the community around social justice and to bring together their interests in poetry and meditation.
