Join Beth Roy on Saturday, Apr. 11th from 10:00 to 1:00 for this fun, hands-on introduction to wheel throwing! In this beginner-friendly workshop, Beth will guide you through the fundamentals—centering clay on the wheel, forming a cylinder, trimming the "skirt," and cutting your piece from the wheel. By the end of class, you’ll have created several small bowls, dishes, or similar masterpieces.

This class is designed especially for beginners or those looking to refine their wheel-throwing technique. We encourage you to come with realistic expectations and a curious, beginner's mindset.

New to Clay?

If you’ve never touched clay before, we highly recommend trying one of our hand-building classes first. These offer a great introduction to the feel of clay and how to manipulate it. They’re also perfect for creating beautiful, larger-scale projects with a high rate of success—even for first-timers!

About the Learning Process:

It’s important to know: no one sits down at the wheel for the first time and magically creates a big, beautiful bowl. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops over time, and every class builds on the one before it. Celebrate your progress—it's a true sign of success!

Get Ready to Get Messy!

Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. (Clay washes out easily!)
An apron is optional but helpful.
Tie back long hair and remove rings and bracelets.
Short nails are best—but not required.


What to Expect

This class last 3 hours: 2.5 hours of instruction and 30 minutes of cleanup. As potters in a community studio, we strive to leave our work space better than we found it.
To ensure plenty of personal instruction, this class is limited to 6 students—1 student per wheel.
You’ll create 2–4 small pieces, such as bowls, coasters, or spoon rests. As you grow your skills, your pieces will grow in size, too!
After class, Beth will trim, dry and bisque fire your pieces. Next she will glaze and kiln fire them again. This process can take up to 4 weeks, depending on drying time and humidity.
We’ll notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup. Finished pieces must be picked up within 90 days of notification.

All-inclusive cost: $79, which covers:

All tool usage and materials
Your choice of 1 glaze color
Two kiln firings
Expert instruction

Join Beth’s Novice Class, a multi-session course covering throwing, trimming, glazing, and firing. (We recommend completing at least two beginner classes first.)
Apply for a Pottery Membership at ARTworks Vass for ongoing studio access. Pottery Memberships do not include instruction.

Children age 14 and older may attend class independently.
Registrations are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled
Registration allows for 1 person per class. Only those who have registered may participate.
Class starts promptly as scheduled.
At ARTworks Vass, you're always welcome to bring your own Nibbles and Sips to class.
You will be notified when your project is ready to pick up.  We will hold it for 90 days with monthly notifications by text or phone. If you haven't requested an extension or picked up your work within 90 days, your project will be disposed of at the gallery's discretion.
