The city’s galleries, museums, independent spaces, as well as unconventional pop-up locations, are filled with visual content seeking the essence of the present day, offering anchors of orientation in a confused reality, and a path toward a sense of self in the age of posthumanism. The festival weekend takes place from 2–5 October. Exhibitions and events continue until 31 October. 100+ participants 20+ locations 30 days exhibitions and events We begin on 2️⃣ October ✨ The theme of this year’s edition – “Native resolution / Innate INAT” – was conceived by Luchezar Boyadjiev, an artist and curator with extensive experience and international perspective. Co-curator of BUNA vol.4 is Boyana Djikova – gallerist and curator, co-founder of PUNTA Gallery and POSTA SPACE. In his characteristic tone, Boyadjiev develops the idea of human stubbornness – inat – as a driving force for resilience, overcoming hardship, and an incurable sense of hope. Serious and humorous at the same time, the text draws on the cultural intimacy of the concept in societies close to our own, while also reaching toward broader references and shared experiences. “The human factor in sustainability is the ability of a person and/or a community to rebound to their native form or condition after pressure, trauma, or catastrophe. It is the ability to remain happy and successful after hardship and failure. In English, this is called resilience. In Bulgarian, however, it is described through a whole range of words: sustainability, toughness, flexibility, elasticity – in short, stubbornness = INAT for life, for culture, for the future, and for happiness. Every year, BUNA brings together between 150 and 180 artists from Bulgaria and abroad and presents an extensive programme of more than 50 events across numerous locations in the maritime capital. Exhibitions, performances, and urban interventions transform Varna into a dynamic stage for contemporary experiences, while organisers and participants use the language of art to offer meaningful commentary and critique on the world we live in today. An important part of BUNA’s practice is its work with unconventional spaces – neglected buildings and sites that have fallen out of use. This tradition is not only a demonstration of art’s transformative power, but also a conceptual approach based on the layering of different contexts, reinforced and retold through the language of visual art. For the second consecutive year, the Balkan Contemporary Art Prize will also be presented within BUNA, organised by the Singer-Zahariev Foundation. The prize aims to support the international visibility of visual artists from the Balkans and to build sustainable connections with the global art scene, while at the same time encouraging regional cooperation and cultural exchange. The award carries a financial prize of EUR 3,000. Finally, October is the sunny secret of the Black Sea coast. Away from the noise and tourism, locals enjoy the gentle autumn weather and the still warm sea. We would be delighted to share this experience with the festival’s visitors. С характерния за него тон Бояджиев извежда в кураторската тема идеята за човешкия инат като движеща сила за устойчивост, преживяване на трудности и нелечима надежда. Призът цели да насърчи международната видимост на балканските визуални артисти и да изгради устойчиви връзки със световната арт сцена, като едновременно с това стимулира регионалното сътрудничество и културния обмен. Наградата е с финансова стойност от 3000 евро.
