But is it really? UBC Sociology Professor Amin Ghaziani will deliver a lecture to challenge the idea that nightlife is dying. Drawing on his award-winning book Long Live Queer Nightlife, Prof. Ghaziani will explore how nightlife is evolving from traditional brick-and-mortar venues to pop-ups, club nights, and other event-based scenes. These newer nightlife forms are more mobile, experimental, intersectional, and inclusive than the institutions they are replacing. Drawing on stories from queer nightlife parties, Prof. Ghaziani shows how people are reinventing what it means to gather, celebrate, and build community after dark. You’ll also hear from Uytae Lee of About Here, who will talk about his upcoming video, “How Cities Killed Nightlife”, and his insights on urban planning’s impact.
