About the event

SC83-"Volcanology Field Techniques" - Field Course
Field short course helps participants to develop the knowledge & skills required for naming, describing & interpreting volcanic successions.

About this Event

Location: Milos, Greece (Venue to be determined - and note that Eventbrite has a glitch and is not accepting Greece as a location)

Introduction

This field short course helps participants to develop the knowledge and skills required for naming, describing and interpreting volcanic successions. It combines fundamental information on how volcanoes work and what they produce, and practical information on how to name, describe and log volcanic facies in the field.
This course will benefit geologists engaged in regional- or deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au). No prior volcanology geologist training is required.

This intensive, 3rd annual, 5 full field-day and 2 partial day field trip will begin in the town of Adamas on the Island of Milos on the evening of Saturday, April 19th and end in the morning in Adamas on April 25th, 2026.

Course Format and Delivery

The short course will be led by Dr. Jocelyn McPhie and and assisted by local geologist. The course will run for 5 full field days throughout the small island, including morning power point lectures and field lectures. As well as a 1/2 day of morning lectures and Q&A on the last day. A 1/2 day of sea kayaks will be used to visit outcrops accessible only via the sea. A comprehensive field guide will be provided.

Milos comprises submarine and subaerial, mainly felsic to intermediate volcanic formations, the oldest of which is ~3 Ma. We will examine:

· Felsic lavas and domes

· Submarine and subaerial pyroclastic deposits, including diverse pumice breccia and fountain deposits

· Shallow intrusions and peperite

· Altered volcanic facies.

Who should attend: This course is intended for geologists engaged in regional- or deposit-scale mapping or in drilling programs in volcanic successions for the purpose of mineral exploration (especially VMS, epithermal Au-Ag, porphyry Cu-Au, komatiite Ni, or diamonds) and for geological survey geologists embarking on mapping projects in volcanic successions. No prior volcanology geology training is required.
