The show's aim is to queer religion through paintings, stained glass, drawings, and zines. Key figures depicted in the art are: Saint Joan of Arc, Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Teresa of Avila, and Saint Marsha P. Johnson. Their queerness, feminism, and fights for equality are represented in themes of cross-dressing, nature, female pleasure, and the Stonewall riots. Local Vancouver saints that remind us that holiness is all around us are also depicted here, such as Saint Charlie (Angel Cat).Vee Chorabik, MFA, studies queer-feminist icons and depicts them in mixed-media and gawdy glitter. They’re an artist and sessional instructor at Emily Carr University, high school teacher, and run various art workshops around Vancouver. They use art and education as safe spaces to express and create 2SLGBTQIA+ pride and community. Many queer folks feel a lack of spirituality as western religion has historically oppressed non-cisheteronormative folks. Vee’s “Sapphic Sanctuary” project aims to create a holy space for those of us left on Earth after the Rapture.Doors: 6:30 pm1
