Mutual Instruments / Symbiotic Instruments

For the past two years, I have worked on instrument design projects in collaboration with drummer/composer Ben Brown. Please join us for a brief concert highlighting two of the projects, Mutual Instruments and Symbiotic Instruments. We will also have some wine/snacks and you can try any of the instruments if you like. Ben will improvise on the instruments and play a few of my compositions. A few more details about the projects:

These ‘mutual instruments for movement and sound’ explore ways of controlling pitch and timbre through movement. They are completely acoustic, employing archaic principles from idiophone instrument design to explore the connections between sound and motion. Ben will play the tuned sticks from this instrument series.

A symbiotic instrument is a designed addition to an existing acoustic instrument utilizing its resonating capabilities. This mechanism produces a hybrid percussion/ string instrument that can be plucked and struck. These devices allow musicians to dramatically alter their sound palette without adding another player or instrument to their ensemble. The symbiotic instrument facilitates new sound explorations while maintaining the original instrument. Rather than making highly specified new instruments from scratch, that would ultimately be exclusive by the nature of the hand crafted original instrument, I am making parasitic additions to existing instruments that can assist musicians in making highly original sounds from standardized and mass produced instruments. Ben will play a snare and tom drum from this instrument series.

Hope to see you there!
