- **Event Description**: The Vancouver Public Library is having its first ever Mini Manga and Anime Convention! We'll have over 30 exhibitor tables and are encouraging you to join in on the fun by building community and exploring the library's manga collections in person and online.

Invite your friends, family and other creators to come out for a fun afternoon to meet and socialize with local Vancouver-based manga and anime communities. Cosplay is strongly encouraged and prizes will be awarded. Haruki Sekiguchi, PhD student in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia will lead with opening remarks. Haruki Sekiguchi will explore the intricacies of how anime engages with the representation of queer and trans characters, with a specific focus on the role of voice acting in shaping these presentations and representations.Care Barker & V Rayne Rahbar will do a lightning talk that introduces through example various types of accessible anime, light novel, and manga titles available in English, French, and Japanese and describe how one can gain access to them at their library and beyond.

Haruki Sekiguchi is a PhD student in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on voice acting in anime and Japanese films, exploring how voice constructs queer and gender presentations and representations. He grew up across Japan, France, and New Zealand. Outside of his research, he enjoys anime, film, pop music, chasing sunsets by the ocean, and boxing.

Care Barker (she/they) is a Masters of Library and Information Studies candidate at the University of British Columbia School of Information. She is also a Student Librarian at UBC. Her art and research center physical and neuro-accessibility, and she takes every opportunity to use comic forms for research and knowledge translation. Care will be co-hosting the UBC Understanding Through Comics program for the 2026 - 2027 year. ﻿﻿

V Rayne Rahbar (she/they) is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Columbia School of Information. She has increasingly engaged with arts-based research, notably non-visual, tactile, and multisensory engagement with popular culture objects and accessible comics. They have conducted museum touch tour like workshops with and on behalf of the Association for Asian Studies, Dōjin Arts, UBC Library, UBC Department of Asian Studies, UBC iSchool, UBC Pop Culture Cluster, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
