A free, outdoor sketching workshop celebrating the connection between the plants of Chén̓chenstway Food Forest and our bird neighbours.

About this Event

Join VUFFF members Destiny Greig and Yoko Tomita for a workshop celebrating the connection between the plants of Chén̓chenstway Healing Garden and the birds who are our neighbours.


Workshop Activities:

  • Participate in a guided walk through the food forest with Yoko to get to know some of the plants, such as Woodland Strawberry, Thimbleberry, Osoberry, Salmonberry, Douglas Aster and Goldenrod.
  • Be introduced to the bird relatives that are present in this place from Destiny, an avid birder who lives nearby.
  • Sketch the plants, bees and birds and paint with watercolour on postcard sized paper.
  • Enjoy socializing in a casual park setting with some support and guidance.

What is provided:

  • Light refreshments
  • Art supplies

Registration:

  • There are two workshops in this series:
  • September 20th, 4-7 pm @ Chén̓chenstway Healing Garden (2050 Wall St)
  • September 27th, 4-7 pm @ Burrardview Fieldhouse (545 Slocan St, separate event listing)
  • Tickets are free and there are a maximum of 15 people.
  • Come to one or both!

About the facilitators:

Destiny Greig is a bird enthusiast focused on Urban Nature and how life adapts in unexpected spaces. Appreciating connections between Birds, Plants, People, Places, and the importance of longstanding local knowledge for the future of these relationships.Yoko Tomita is a community artist and instructor of acrylic painting, sketching, drawing and water colour. She has led many community engaged art projects in East Vancouver for over 25 years, such as street banners, the fountain mosaic project, and community murals with multicultural participants. Each year during the Moon Festival and Winter Solstice Festival at Renfrew Park, you can see Yoko’s many unique lanterns on display. Yoko’s artistic expression focuses on bright colours and local animals, flora and fauna, bringing smiles and joy to everyone who engages with her work.
