We will have binoculars to loan on a first-come first-served basis.We’re taking a page from the vulture handbook and having a chill morning hanging out with our pals, soaking up the sun, and partaking in some snacks (carrion not included). This will be a Bird Sit rather than a Walk so feel free to bring camp chairs or blankets, as well as any treats you might like to share with your fellow scavengers; we’ll try to snag the little amphitheater by the parking lot that has built-in seating and picnic benches but if it’s too busy and/or sunny there we will pick a shady spot beneath one of the big oaks in the park. It's still summer for a few more weeks, and unlike turkey vultures, we cannot cool ourselves down via urohydrosis**, so we recommend bringing water, a hat, sunscreen and/or perhaps a parasol. **Urohydrosis is the evaporative cooling process by which TVs beat the heat—they can’t sweat but by defecating on their own legs, they can both regulate their body temperature and disinfect feet that may have been in recent roadkill contact.Please be sure to RSVP. 🦆🦅🦜PARKING INSTRUCTIONS:We will meet at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve by the amphitheater behind the restrooms, approximately here: (34.1794670, -118.4728597).The parking lot (34.1800126, -118.4727025) is located past an oak tree roundabout, but there is also a dirt lot before the roundabout as well as other parking lots at Woodley Park in the event that parking is too crowded.You can use a maps app to navigate to "Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve" or "Sepulveda Basin Amphitheater". If you have any trouble finding us, please text Angela at (818) 521-6338.ACCESSIBILITY:There is a short, flat paved walk from the parking lot to the amphitheater. Depending on shade and/or space availability, we may relocate to another spot on the mostly flat park/lawn area, which does slope down a bit and has some gopher holes to watch out for. There is also a wheelchair and stroller accessible ramp that leads down the hill to the grass. Once we’re in place, we’ll be sitting and birding from benches, in chairs, and/or on picnic blankets on the ground.Restrooms are found near the amphitheater (though we can’t make any promises about their cleanliness).
