The contrast between the modern view of Washington and Lee at Monmouth versus that of yesteryear is so striking that one must question the reliability of the evidence that defines this conflict between the two commanders. Gary Ecelbarger will present the Monmouth Campaign with an emphasis on the underappreciated two-week history between Washington and Lee leading up to the battle. He will also provide a fresh, detailed account of the weekend conflict between the armies and between the top two generals leading the Americans in that contest. This fascinating story within a story is detailed in Ecelbarger’s latest book, his second Volume of George Washington’s Momentous Year: Twelve Months that Transformed the Revolution. Gary Ecelbarger is an award winning author of ten books and over forty monographs, essays and articles about 18th and 19th Century personalities and events, including a dozen contributions to the Journal of the American Revolution. He has conducted tours for various companies of Revolutionary War campaigns and battlefields for the past twenty years. Ecelbarger’s presentations have been featured several times on C-Span2 (Book TV). He was recently announced as the runner up for the Fraunces Tavern Museum Award for his most recent book, the second volume of George Washington’s Momentous Year–featuring Valley Forge and the Monmouth campaign–after winning the award last year for Volume 1. A native of Niagara County, New York, Ecelbarger obtained his MS at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has lived in Virginia with his family since the 1990s.
