In this workshop, Ira Melkonyan guides participants through the creative essence of her ongoing artistic research, tracing the artwork from its initial spark through to its staging and international touring. The workshop covers dramaturgical choices, the role of research, the use of sound design, set and production, and the philosophy behind theatre with more-than-human entities, where objects, liquids, wind and memory are active co-creators of meaning.

Upstairs Geology is a continuous performative commitment to theatre with more-than-human entities: thickened and coloured water, ropes, pumps, soundscapes, gravity, weather and wind are all cast as performers and witnesses in equal measure. The work decentralises the human on stage, posing urgent questions about fluidity, climate threat and the desire to control unruly bodies and borders. Winner of the ZKB Acknowledgement Prize 2019 at the Zürcher Theatrespektakel in Switzerland, the jury praised it as an outstanding example of political art that invites audiences to follow the transformation of a leaky landscape. The piece has been presented at the Donaufestival (Austria) and supported by DAS Theatre, Amsterdam.

This workshop is part of Ira’s Sabbatical for Artistic Research titled "Ta' Ġewwa: Contemplations on Belonging", supported by the Arts Council Malta.
